"Lewis E. (Gene) Sporer, age 79, of Raymondville, TX, formerly of Marceline, MO, departed this life for eternal rest on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Solaria Hospital in Harlingen, TX.

Gene was born on August 30, 1931 in Marceline, MO to the late Lewis R. and Eugenia (Nico) Sporer. He married Gwenna Hunsaker on April 16, 1981 and she survives of the home in Raymondville. Gene was a graduate of Marceline High School in 1948 and immediately went to work as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad until his enlistment in the United States Air Force in February 1952.

He served as a Personnel and Command Records Specialist with Hq., 5th AF, Korea and Japan. Upon his discharge in Dec. 1955, Gene attended Truman State University (then NEMO St. College) in Kirksville, MO, graduating with a B.S. Ed. & M.A. in Elementary and City School Administration. While in college he was very active and was an officer in Blue Key, MO Historical Soc., Newman Club, Kappa Delta Phi and the BBWC.

After graduating with honors in 1961 he began his educational career as a 6th grade teacher in Lee's Summit, MO. He then became principal of the Walt Disney Elementary School in Marceline. During that time he served as chairman of the Marceline Community Chest and was a member of the Jaycees, Lions Club, VFW, and a board member of the St. Francis Hospital Association. Gene then became an Associate Director of Admissions for Stephens College in Columbia, MO, Superintendent at Callao, MO, and Elementary Principal with the Brunswick School District.

After retiring from school administration he ran a shoe repair business for several years. In 1993 the family moved to Raymondville, TX where he enjoyed his retirement years. He loved sharing his life with his faithful wife, Gwenna, and his many pets.

He is survived by his wife Gwenna; two children born of the heart, a son, Pvt. Donald Gene Sporer of Ft. Eustis, VA, and a daughter, Margaret Ann Sporer. He is also survived by two brothers, Francis B. Sporer of Virginia Beach, VA and James R. Sporer of Lee's Summit, MO; three grandchildren, two nieces and five nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents Lewis and Eugenia Sporer, and his older brother Richard Sporer.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1pm with Rosary at 1:45 at Delaney Funeral Home in Marceline. Graveside with Military Honors will follow at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Marceline. Family requests donations be made to the St. Bonaventure Capital Campaign Fund and these may be left at or mailed to Delaney Funeral Home, 1720 N. Missouri Ave., Marceline, MO 64658."
