Tena Rathman Dec. 3, 1909 – May 8, 2011

OLIVIA — Tena Rathman, 101, of Olivia died Sunday at the Golden Living Center in Olivia.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with the Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Olivia.

Visitation will be from noon to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service in Olivia.

Tena Ann Rathman was born Dec. 3, 1909, at Wellsberg, Iowa, to Peter and Tena (Heyenga) Vanderwerf. She attended school at first in Iowa, and when she was about 9, her family moved to Springfield where she continued her schooling.

Tena married Leonard E. Rathman on Feb. 5, 1929, in Comfrey, and they were blessed with eight children: Angie, Marge, Eugene "Bud," Mary Ann, Donald, Edward, Leonard Jr. and Darlene. They made their home and farmed south of Olivia for many years. Her husband died in 1975 and soon thereafter she moved into town.

Tena enjoyed gardening, fishing, bird watching, being at the lake and especially having coffee with friends and family.

Recently Tena has resided at the Golden Living Center.

Tena is survived by her children: Angie Rathman of Lake Lillian, Marge (and Jim) Bernhagen of Arizona, Eugene Rathman of Minneapolis, Ann (and Bob) Puls of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Darlene and (and Paul) Haney of Spicer; her brother, Sam Vanderwerf of Springfield; her sister, Lizzie Jutz of New Ulm; her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Tena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard Rathman; her three sons: Donald, Len Jr. and Edward Rathman; and her 11 brothers and sisters.
