Massena- Norman H. Hicks, 86, 14 Colgate Drive, passed away on Sunday morning, May 8,2011 at Massena Memorial Hospital with his family and hospice by his side.

Norman was born March 17, 1925, in Mattydale, the son of James H. and Iva M. Twitchell Hicks. He attended Belleville Grade School and graduated from Mannsville High School in 1941. On June 15, 1943, he entered the US Navy where he served as a Sea Bee until his honorable discharge on March 4, 1946. After discharge, he enrolled at Canton ATC where he graduated in 1948. On August 29, 1947, he married Dora Burdick at the Union Church in Pierrepont Manor with Rev. Harold Douglas officiating.

In 1950 he began working for Lowe Brothers, which is now Sherwin- Williams where he remained, until his retirement in 1987. He was an active member of the Salvation Army and enjoyed rose gardening, fishing and woodworking.

Norman is survived by his wife Dora; three sons and their wives, Brandon and Sandy of Parish; Brian and Debra of Massena; Barry and Nelly of Goose Creek, South Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Lou Embrey of Hope Mills, North Carolina; Laura and Richard Prievo of Carthage; a sister-in-law, Rita Hicks of Kitchner, Ontario, Canada; a brother, John and Beth Hicks of Henderson; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Robert.

Friends may call Tuesday 4-7 at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where memorial services will be held at 7:00PM with Salvation Army Majors William and Cecelia Lynch, and Pastor Theresa Shear, Co-officiating. Friends may call Wednesday 1-3 at the Union Church, Pierrepont Manor, where funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM with Pastor David Rudd, officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Roberts Corners, Town of Henderson.

In lieu of flowers please consider, Salvation Army Massena Corps, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, or the Union Church of Pierrepont Manor.
