Civil War records
Had the index finger of right hand shot off on the second day of the Battle of Shiloh Apr 6-7 1862 while in Illinois Infantry. Wound became infected and he was discharged. When it healed he enlisted in 9th Iowa Cavalry and fought in Arkansas until the end of the war.

Alexander Hittle married Sarah Elizabeth Lindsay Oct. 27, 1863 in Mt. Morris, Ogle, Co., IL. They had two sons, Edward E. Hittle b 29 Mar. 1868 in Illinois, Died Dec. 27, 1952 in Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. and William Guy Hittle b. May 13, 1875 in Butte, Santa Clara Co., Calif., Died Dec. 21, 1949 Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.
Alexander and Sarah divorced Apr. 29, 1881 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL.
Alexander remarried May 25, 1881 to Mate T. McGinley b. July 10, 1854 in Geneseo, Henry Co., IL. Died Oct. 1, 1919, Geneseo, Henry Co., IL.
After Alexander died, she remarried to Charles E. Mace Jun 27, 1885.

Sarah E. Hittle, widow of Alexander Hittle applying for pension.

Inguinal hernia, varicose veins, rheumatism in left side and shoulder, deaf entirely in right ear. Deafness by artillery fire while in the Army. He was discharged as a veteran.
