For a while he lived in Harvey, WV and worked at the mine there. He married Mary F. Paxton on February 5, 1918.
After Mary died, he married Thelma Irvin on June 23, 1919 in a double-wedding ceremony in Fayetteville with his brother Sheridan and Thelma's sister Bridget Irvin. Sheridan was Dave's closest brother, they did nearly everything together. In addition to marrying sisters on the same day, they worked side by side in the Cadle Ridge coal mine at Newlyn with their brother Dewey. A slate fall in the mine killed Sheridan immediately. Dave's back was broken and he died the following day. Brother Dewey survived.

The article states the accident was January 18, but it appears to have been during the night of January 19 and January 20. David's death certificate states that the signing physician attended him from January 20 to January 21 when he died.
