John was the son of John Paul Jones and Minerva (Callaway) Jones. He married Nancy Jane Wyatt on October 20, 1852 in Vernon County, Missouri. Their children were Eugene E., Mary E., Marshall Lannes, Sallie and John. Nancy died in 1868.

In Audrain County, Missouri John second married Mary Eliza Turley on November 16, 1869. He was 41 years old. Their (known) children were Nannie and Florence, both of whom died young. John was a stockman by trade. He was widowed a second time in 1886 when Mary died of typhoid fever. John afterward married Maria Farsdale, but was widowed a third time.

John lived to be 90 years old. He died from complications from pneumonia.
