James Robert "J.R." Collins died Aug. 10, 2010, in Temple at the Texas State Veterans Home. He was 85.

A memorial service is scheduled Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. at First Street Church of Christ in Lampasas.

Mr. Collins was born Nov. 26, 1924 in Nevada County, Ark., to Ola Mae and James Marshall Collins. He was the oldest sibling of his family.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Collins also was a Church of Christ minister for most of his life. He was known for his love of scripture, love for the church and for those in the communities where he lived.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Clary Collins; daughters Pam Holliday and husband Gene, Mary Gosvenor and husband Truman, Sally Collins, and Missy McCallie and husband Billy; one son, Bob Collins; stepdaughters Kathy Hyatt and husband Gary, and Sharleen Alderson and husband James; stepsons Harrell Clary, Charles Clary and wife Linda, and Boyd Clary and wife Sheila; sisters Sue Hicks, and Twyla Mengers and husband Wayne; one brother, William House; plus a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian Davies Collins; by brothers Thomas "Bub" Collins and Paul House; and by a sister, Marshallene Anderson.
