ROGERSVILLE -- J. Joe Burton, age 81, Rogersville, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

He was a native of Hawkins County. He volunteered for the armed services in June of 1940 and was a first sergeant veteran of World War II He was in 672 Field ART BN battalion, serving five years in the European Theatre. Assignments included tours of France, England, Germany, Belgium and Italy. He was a veteran, epitomizing dignity and courage and representing the highest levels of honor. He participated in numerous training missions. He was a lifetime member (50 years) of the Veterans of Foreign Wrs, and a lifetime member (50) years of the American Legion. He was owner and operator of Burton's Gulf Station and Grocery Store for 35 years. He was a member of Hickory Cove Baptist Church. He was past president of Rogersville Rotary Club and a member of the Farm Service Agency.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Lon and Nola Davis Burton; and brothers, Gerald B. Burton and Arnold R. Burton.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Lea Burton of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie Lee and Dale Allen, Surgoinsville; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Lee, Rogersville, Louise Lee and husband Ellis, Kingsport, and Jimmye Burton, Tuscaloosa, AL; two nieces, Suzanne Young, Tuscaloosa, and Mrs. Bob Peck, Greensboro, NC.

Calling hours will be 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Highland Cemetery with Rev. Charlie Harrison officiating. Military honors will be provided by Hammond Post #3, Kingsport.
