New Hampshire Governor, U.S. Senator, Major League Baseball Player. Prior to a political career, he played as an outfielder for two seasons with the Boston Beaneaters, (1901-02). He then received an education at Dow Academy, Dartmouth College, a law degree from Boston University, in 1906 and established his legal practice in Somersworth, New Hampshire. He was Somersworth city solicitor, (1910-14), Mayor of Somersworth, (1914-22) and the U.S. District Attorney. In 1922, he was elected as a Democrat the 68th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1925. During his term, the state mental hospital was improved and the state deficit was eliminated. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was the New Hampshire State Public Service Commissioner, (1925-32) and was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1933-39). After leaving the Senate, he was the U.S. Comptroller General, (1939-40) and a member of the U.S. Tariff Commission, (1940-41).
