Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. The first of five brothers to play professional baseball he was the game’s premier slugger during the 1890s. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1888 to 1901 and for the Washington Senators from 1902 until his death in 1903. He had a .346 career batting average and led his league in doubles and slugging percentage five times, runs batted in three times, home runs twice and steals once. He had a batting average of over .300 for twelve straight seasons, hitting over .400 three times. On July 13, 1896, “Big Ed” assured himself a place in baseball history when he became the second player to hit four home runs in one game. All four were inside the park home runs. His career ended tragically when he fell from a bridge at Niagara Falls. Although some expected foul play it was ruled an accidental death. In 1945 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
