Dr Theodore Engle, prominent physician of this community for more than forty years and one of the best known doctors in central Iowa, died at his home in this city last Friday morning at 8:30 after an illness of about nine months with cancer of the bladder.

Dr Engle underwent an operation last fall for relief of his trouble and his case has been considered serious much of the time since. With Mrs Engle he spent last winter in Florida, returning a few months ago.

Theodore Engle was born Benton Ridge, Hancock County, Ohio March 11, 1856. He was graduated from the University of Michigan, where he received his degree of doctor of medicine in 1875. He also received a degree from the Missouri College of St Louis in 1885.

When about 14 years of age he came west, his family moving to Kansas from the old home in Ohio. He came to Iowa and for several years taught school near Newton, later practicing his profession there for four years.

He came to State Center in 1880 and has since engaged in his practice in Marshall County. He was associated with Dr C W Coe for several years and later was a member of the firm of Engle, Kauffman and Woods. The last eight years he had been associated with Dr A D Woods in the firm of Engle and Woods, and during the same period conducted the Englewood Hospital.

Dr Engle had taken a very active part for many years in orders and fraternal circles. He served the community for years not only as physician but also held office in both school and town affairs. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Eastern Star, Knights of Pythias, Pythian Sisters, Modern Woodmen of America, Ben Hur, Odd Fellows and Royal Neighbors. He was also a director in Central State Bank of this city.

Dr Engle was married May 5, 1880 to Miss Carrie Kenyon of Newton, who survives him with a son, K L Engle of Portland, Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs Ildra Davenport of Berkeley, California. Five brothers and a sister also survive in the persons of Dr Perry Engle of Newton, Andrew and Melvin Engle of Metz, Lorenzo Engle of Baxter, Adam Engle of Wichita Falls, Texas and Mrs Drucilla Wilcox of Stanton, Michigan. The daughter and Mr Perry Engle and Mrs Wilcox were in State Center when death came.

The home was open to friends Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. Later the body was taken to Des Moines for cremation.
