John Robinson died in Archer City, Texas April 12, 1986 at the age of 90. He was born May 29, 1895 in Goldthwaithe, Mills County, Texas; the son of John Mabry Robinson (1858-1937) and Mary Elizabeth Worthy Robinson (1874-1947). He was one of 10 children and was known as Johnnie until sometime in his adult life he changed to John E. The "E" did not represent a middle name.
At an early age the family moved to several areas including the Rio Grande Valley and Lordsberg, New Mexico where John was night clerk and chambermaid. In his young adult life John was a cowboy near Duncan, Arizona and in Colorado he worked on a beet farm as irrigation laborer and construction of barns. He worked in Fort Worth, Texas before moving to Archer City, Texas about 1915 where he farmed on rented land with one owned horse and one borrowed. His parents then lived east of Archer City where the city dump was started years later.
He met Lela Board at Truce in nearby Jack County and in 1916 the couple ran away after Church in Truce to be married in Jacksboro, Texas. They lived on a farm west of Archer City and there daughters Percella (1917-2009) and Merna (1919-2004) were born before moving to his parents farm east of Archer City which he purchased. Treva (1921-1986) was born there. His wife Lela died from a miscarriage (1897-1923). Soon thereafter he moved to Archer City to work as a blacksmith and wheelwright in the Midnight Garage where he and 3 brothers worked. They also sold Star autos. When the city purchased their first fire truck in 1926 it was stored in the garage and John was made Fire Chief in 1927 and John served in that capacity until 1955. As a tribute to his long service the fire hat is engraved on his gravestone with the statement "A MAN WHO DID FOR HIS TOWN". He bought land in 1929 near the fire station and southeast of the court house square then built a house there. His brother David and his wife Juanita plus John's three daughters lived in the house for several years.
In 1932 John married Berthinia Sutherland and their daughter Cleva Yvette "Vet" Robinson was born in 1933. Bert preceded John in death as a result of an automobile accident in 1952. John married Kathleen Krajca (1905-c1999 ) in 1956. After the retirement from fire fighting John attended beauty school and after studying around the world in Europe and Japan he worked as a beautician and included his lifelong painting and photography work in the same building.
He was survived by his wife Kathleen and by daughters Elma Percella Robinson Tucker, Merna Doris Robinson Eckstine, Treva Leona Robinson Smith and Cleva Yvette Robinson Gans. One grand daughter Babara Haney (1939-1952) (FAG Memorial 84299684) preceded him in death but surviving grand children were Wayne Douglas Eckstine, Arthur Jay Eckstine, Lisa May Eckstine Johnson, Phillip Arthur Robertson, Honali Austin and Grant John Austin.
