Phyllis was the first born child of Johann 'John' Josef Kuh and Mary Karlowitz Kuh, immigrants from Austria. She had a younger sister named Eleanor Marie and a younger brother named Joseph. The Kuh family made several trips to Austria to visit relatives during Phyllis' childhood. Her father and mother ran a restaurant and bar in Chicago. Phyllis' parents later divorced and her mother married William Denker and changed Phyllis and her sister's last name to Denker.
On January 16, 1940 Phyllis married Hal Haase and together they had a son and a daughter. Tragically, Phyllis died at the young age of 41 due to Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
