Hal was the second child of three born to Hermann Gustav Fritz Haase and Anna Alvina Ernstiene Schewe. He had an older sister named Hilota Louise Haase and a younger brother named Heinz 'Henry' F. Haase. In 1924 the Haase family emigrated from Germany to America and settled in Chicago, Illinois.

Hal married Phyllis Anne Kuh Denker January 16, 1940 and together they had a son and a daughter. Hal was employed as a draftsman in Chicago at Victor X-ray and then Automatic Electric. The family moved to Fond du Lac in 1948 where he owned and operated Procknow Wilbert Vault Company and two pre-cast concrete companies in Oshkosh from 1948 until 1970. He sold the companies in 1970 and worked for Moraine Park Technical College for ten years.

Hal was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church and the Evening Optimist Club. He enjoyed designing residential homes as a hobby.

Hal died as a result of injuries received in a car accident at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff.
