Born in the tidal island community of Omey, County Galway, Ireland, about 9 miles NW of Clifden in the Diocese of Tuam, Bridget was Baptized at St. Joseph Church on Jun 29, 1864 (tombstone incorrectly states 1866), the daughter of Gregory Heanie (Haney) and Mary Walsh. Her Baptismal sponsors were Michael Walsh and Bridget Walsh, with the ceremony officiated by the Rev. Patrick Walsh, C.C. Surname given as Heanie, while American records give as Haney. In Louisville, she married Edmond J. "Ed/Edward" Farell on May 11, 1885, at St. Michael Catholic Church, on Brook Street, officiated by Rev. H. Plaggenborg, witnesses Edward Farrell and Katie Ruell, with the bond posted by William M. Devan, chief of the US Life Saving Station, and Ed Farrell’s commander.

Her mother, Mary Walsh Heanie, is buried in the now abandoned old St. Joseph Church Cemetery in Clifden (the “new” church, completed in 1879 after the Heanie’s immigrated, and the current cemetery stand across the street). An index gives a death record for a Mary Heanie, born ca. 1831, died 1866 in Clifden who may be Bridget’s mother. St. Joseph records list the following Mary Walsh births: Mary, born Jan 26, 1839, father James; Mary, Baptized Apr 5, 1839, parents Pat and Bridget Joyce (Joice); Mary, Baptized Apr 22, 1839, parents Thomas & Harriet Lynas Walsh; and, Mary, born Nov 1, 1841, father T. – it’s quite possible that none of these records are the correct person, as Clifden was not settled until the 1820s, hence many additional Mary Walsh’s can be found in nearby communities, particularly Ballinakill, that well may be her.

Following Mary Walsh Heanie's death, Bridget's father Gregory remarried, according to a Clifden index of a marriage record of Oct 29, 1866, for Gregory Heanie, single, age 40, son of Anthony Heanie, and Winifred Flaherty. Gregory shows up on the 1880 Louisville Census as “Rugery Haney” age 50, with wife Winna, also 50, and 17 year old son Patrick Haney. A "Bridget Hehan" age 15, born Ireland, lives nearby with a wealthy family on Broadway, serving as a child nurse (Nanny) to the younger children and is likely our Bridget. On the 1900 Census, Gregory, 74, single, born Oct 1826 Ireland, lives in Maysville. Four houses away lives Winnie Haney, 69, listed as a servant and widow, born Oct 1830, Ireland. Obviously separated, it was common for women in this circumstance and time period to list themselves as a widow. Winifred Haney, widow, age 80, died there Nov 25, 1915, and is buried in St. Patrick Cemetery, the same resting place as Rosemary Clooney. No death date has been found for Gregory. His dad Anthony died in 1874, age 76, in Clifden, with the surname spelled "Heanue". Other Heanie/Heanue records in Clifden near this time include, Mary Heanie, age 60, died 1865. John Heanue, age 73, died 1873. Jeffrey Heanue, age 70, died 1871.

Bridget stated 1874 as her immigration. An immigration record has been found for the ship "Scythia" which arrived in New York, NY on June 7, 1876 from Queenstown, Ireland and Liverpool, England listing a John Haney, age 17, and a Bridget Haney, age 10 as passengers - likely her and a brother. Her father immigrated as well, and may have lived in the Maysville area, as well as Louisville, but no conclusive records have been discovered for him. As for Bridget's brothers, granddaughter Marty Hamilton Martin says that Bridget said "they went off to fight Indians" and also related that Bridget did not get along with her stepmother Winnie.

Ed & Bridget had 8 children:
Mamie, John, Ed, Ida, Mattie Belle, Walter, Bill and Bob (see daughter Mamie's page for further information).

The family usually lived near the Ohio River, on north 3rd & 4th streets, eventually moving to the Guthrie-Coke Apartments at 4th & Chestnut streets.
