Attended Bethel Academy in Bethel, Maine. Enlisted in the 1st Maine Regiment in April 1861 and discharged in August 1861. Re-enlisted in 10th Maine Regiment and promoted to Sergeant Major. Later promoted to regimental adjutant with the rank of 1st lieutenant. Participated in Shenandoah Valley campaign and fought a the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Mustered out in early 1863.

Participated in the pursuit of the captured Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing in July 1863 off Portland, Maine. Joined 29th Maine Regiment late in 1863 and participated in the Red River Campaign in 1864 under command of Major General Banks. The regiment was transferred to Virginia and participated in the Wilderness Campaign. Promoted to the rank of major in December 1864.

Assigned to occupation duty in South Carolina in 1865 and served as a provost judge. Resigned from Army in 1866 and pursued and unsuccessful lumber business in South Carolina.

Returned to Maine in 1867 and pursued a career as a banker with the National Traders Bank.

Authored "History of the 1st-10th-29th Maine Regiment" and "How to Camp Out". Kept a lifelong diary the Civil War portion of which was recently published.

Life long friend of Edward Sylvester Morse a noted expert in Japanese pottery and curator of the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
