US Congressman. He was a United States Representative from the State of Louisana. He was born one of six children as Joseph Aristide Landry to Narcisse Joseph Landry (1786-1870), and his wife Marie Henriette Blanchard Landry (1782-1828), in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, on July 10, 1817. He also had one half-sibling named, Marie Zulmee Landry (1838-1913). He was educated locally and attended school in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Following his education, he pursued a career in politics. He served a term as a Member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives in 1840. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Henry Adams Bullard (1788-1851), on March 4, 1851. A Member of the Whig Party, he then served Louisiana's 2nd District (Thirty-Second Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1851, to March 3, 1853. In total, he was elected in 1850. Following his term in the United States Congress, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Theodore Gaillard Hunt (1805-1893), on March 4, 1853. After leaving the United States Congress, he served with the rank of Sergeant in the Chasseurs de l'Ascension, a military organization of considerably local fame. During the American Civil War, he served his country attached to Company B of the Canneers of Donaldsville, Louisiana, fighting on the side of the Confederacy. He also served as President of the Police Jury of Ascension Parish, Louisiana, in 1861. He retired from public service shortly thereafter. He was also a slaveowner. He passed away following a short battle with cancer of the neck in his native Donaldson, Louisiana, on March 9, 1881, at the age of 63. Following his death, a funeral service was held with many friends, family, and colleagues of high respect and esteem in attendance. He was remembered as, "Mr. Landry occupied, during his lifetime, a prominent position in the community of which he was a valued and respected member, and always took a lively interest in all questions affecting the public welfare." Also, "We join the feeling of general regret and sadness caused by the death of this old and honored citizen, and also in extending to his relatives assurance of profound sympathy in their bereavement." Following his funeral service, he was buried in the impressive Landry Tomb with other deceased family members in Ascension of our Lord Catholic Church Cemetery in Donaldson, Louisiana. He was married twice, first to Anne Estelle Landry (1819-1845), in Ascension, Louisiana, on April 21, 1838, and second to Marie-Anne Nesida Landry (1827-1883), in Ascension, Louisiana, on February 10, 1847.
