U.S. Senator. He graduated from William and Mary College in 1802, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Petersburg, Virginia. He served U.S. Military in the War of 1812 and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1811-13). He also was again a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1830-31) and official reporter of the Virginia State Court of Appeals (1829-41). In 1834, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William C. Rives and reelected as a Whig, serving until he resigned in 1836. After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
