Social Reformer. Born in Norwich, England, the daughter of a Quaker merchant, on August 19, 1800, she married Joseph Fry, a fellow member of the Society of Friends. In 1813, she visited Newgate Prison in London, and was so horrified by what she saw that she devoted the rest of her life to prison reform. She visited prisons throughout England, Scotland and Ireland, as well as on the Continent. Many of her proposals, such as that the sexes should be segregated, that prisoners should be given useful work to do, and that they should receive instruction in matters both religious and secular, were adopted in her lifetime. On May 21, 2002, the anniversary of her birth, her portrait was used on the new issue of the five pound note. Although Quakers do not have funeral services as such, over one thousand people attended her burial, which was held at North Street in Barking, Essex. The Meeting House, just opposite the burial ground, is now a Sikh Temple, and the burial ground itself was bought by Barking Council. Elizabeth Fry is still under the ground there, but her headstone was removed to the Quaker Cemetery in Bush Road, Wantage. As you enter, it is on the left hand side, in the rear row, six stones along. (The fifth stone, to the left of the Frys, is that of George Fox's son-in-law.) The inscription is extremely difficult to identify, but reads: "Joseph Fry, died 1861, aged 84. Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Fry, died 1845, aged 65."
