Physician. He was a Japanese physician who was a pioneer and specialist in mental health. Born the grandson of Dutch-studies scholar Mitsukuri Genpo, he studied the Chinese culture as a student. After graduating from the Medical College of the Imperial University in 1890, he joined the Seishin Byogaku Kyoshitsu, a psychiatry course, and became an assistant at the Medical College next year. He studied in Europe from 1897 to 1901. In 1901, he became a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Tokyo. Later, he became president of Tokyo Prefectural Sugamo Hospital and the first president of Matsuzawa Hospital. He helped to start the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology. He started and was the co-editor of "Psychiatry Magazine." He established the Japanese Society for the History of Medicine in 1927 and served as its first president. Facing a long history of injustices, he was successful in changing the treatment of mental health patients in Japan. For this accomplishment, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 3rd class. He died from renal failure.
