Rodney Taber Hood

Rodney Taber Hood, 78, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a resident of Franklin.

He was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Kenmore, N.Y. His parents were Arthur Springate and Helen Emma (Schanck) Hood. He married Carolyn Jean Osborne on Oct. 15, 1949, in Racine, Wis. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Rebecca R. Mathey of Cincinnati; two sons, Philip O. Hood of Salem, Ore., and Jonathan B. Hood of Centennial, Colo.; two sisters, Janet D. Fitts of De Leon Springs, Fla., and Marjorie B. Hoffman of Salem, S.C.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Malcolm W. Hood.

He graduated from Kenmore High School in Kenmore, N.Y., in 1942; from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, magna cum laude in 1946; from the University of Wisconsin in 1947 and 1950; from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y., in 1953; and from the University of Chicago in 1965. He received his doctorate degree in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin.

He taught mathematics at Franklin College for 32 years and chaired the mathematics department for 10 years. He previously taught mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Chicago, Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., and Ohio University and taught New Testament Greek at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School.

He served as pastor of Lincoln Baptist Church in Macedon, N.Y., from 1950 to 1953. He also taught mathematics in the National Science Foundation summer institutes at the University of Missouri and Franklin College from 1960 to 1971. He wrote "Logic and Mathematics," which was used for several years as a textbook at Franklin College. He published several journal articles, book reviews and book chapters and gave mathematical talks to high school teachers and at professional and international mathematics meetings.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Franklin, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, American Civil Liberties Union, Mathematical Association of America, American Mathematical Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and the Alpha Society of Franklin College. He and his wife also supported many organizations concerned with peace, justice, education, conservation, environment, refugees and hunger.

The Revs. Richard C. Martin and John S. Eley will conduct a memorial service at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Franklin. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Wright Memorial Chapel at the Franklin United Methodist Community and from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church. Inurnment will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Tonawanda, N.Y. Vandivier-Parsley Funeral Home on East Jefferson Street in Franklin is handling arrangements.
