Jeptha Byrum was a native of New England, and when the boy removed with his parents to New York, they became pioneers of that State. He married Hannah Beardsley, a native of Connecticut, and six children were born: Eliza, Almon, Huldah, Eleazer, Amanda and Sophia (deceased).

They moved with their family to Geauga County, Ohio in 1827, becoming pioneers of the county.
