PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- Charles Gene Cooper, 87, a resident of Illinois Veteran's Home and formerly of El Paso and Pittsfield, entered into eternal rest Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, in Quincy. He was born Sept. 11, 1927, in Hannibal, Mo., a son of Orin and Thelma Harris Cooper. He married Annette Anderson in September 1950 in Pittsfield, and she preceded him in death June 28, 1986. Gene graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1945. He was a farmer for most of his life in the Pike County/Rockport area and a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army with the military police in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He enjoyed playing cards, he loved wildflowers, his grandchildren, raising cattle and just being on the farm. He is survived by his children, Bob (Marsha) Cooper of Marshall, Mo., and Ruth Ann (Rich) Uphoff of El Paso; grandchildren Nick (Allison) Uphoff and Emily (Wade) Furrow; great-grandchildren, Millie Uphoff, Lucy Uphoff, and Abby Furrow; his brothers, Orin C. Jr (Ardith) Cooper of Morris, Arnold Cooper of Quincy, and Bruce (Minnie) Cooper of Winchester. Gene was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, George (surviving wife Karen) of Winchester. SERVICES: Private graveside services will be held at the Adams-Dustin Cemetery near Atlas. VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home. MEMORIALS: Adams-Dustin Cemetery Association or St. Jude's.
