Scientist, educator, businessman. His work in geology and mineralogy led to his appointment by then Secretary of State James Buchannan as an advisor to the Turkish Government. Collection of meteorites now housed at Harvard University. Published 145 scientific papers. Elected president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, one of the highest honors American scientist can bestow on their peers. Married daughter of James Guthrie, Sarah Julia Guthrie.
