U.S. Congressman. He attended Kent Academy, Brown University and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was a Major in the 4th Regiment of Rhode Island Militia and served in the Dorr Rebellion. He was a member of the Warwick town council in 1844, a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1841, 51) and served in the Rhode Island State Senate, (1848, 53). In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a Internal Revenue tax collector for the second district of Rhode Island, (1862-71) and was in charge of the money-order division of the Providence Post Office, until his death at age 71.
