Leonarda Louise (Duft) Adams was born May 19, 1912, on her parents, Mathilda (Peters) and Ferdinand Duft's farm, 7 miles east of Starkweather. She attended a 1 room country school located in her parent's field, and graduated from the 8th grade. In her early teens, Leonarda started working at the Chris Berg farm, caring for the Berg children and cooking, baking and cleaning. This was the beginning of her career of hard work and multi-tasking.

This is where she met Wendell, the love of her life. They were married at Assumption Catholic Church in Starkweather on July 22, 1933. After living in Minnesota, they moved back to North Dakota and, in 1945, purchased the Duft homestead and farmland. "Dodie", as Wendell called her, helped with the farm work and together they lovingly raised 6 children. Dodie enjoyed tending her large vegetable and flower gardens, plowing the fields, and hauling grain at harvest time. In 1977, they retired from farming and moved to Devils Lake. They then enjoyed traveling the United States by motor home with son, Gordon and his wife, Hazel.

Dodie was a member of Assumption and St Joseph Altar Societies through the years. Dodie loved to crochet, play card games, go dancing, and make certain everyone had enough food to eat. The center of Dodie's home was her kitchen table, where friends and family were always welcome. She was "ever-ready" to prepare someone's favorite food, just for them! Dodie's strong work ethic and unlimited energy were an inspiration to family, and also helped her cope with her loss of vision and other serious medical issues. She will always be remembered for her strong will and "never give up" attitude. What she lacked in height, she made up for in speed and determination!

Dodie is survived by her daughter-in-law, Hazel Adams of Colorado City, Colorado~children, Dennis Adams and his wife Dontee of Bismarck, ND~Glenn Adams and his wife Barbara of Davis Ville, West Virginia~Janice and her husband Frank White of Las Vegas, Nevada~Deanna and her husband Dwight Syverson of Minot, ND~Sharon and her husband, Gary Johnson of Cando; Sixteen Grandchildren and Thirty-Four Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Hermena Larson~Mathilda "Tillie" Larson~Rose Gulseth all of Devils Lake and Cecelia Benson and her husband Ed of Portland, Oregon; Brother-In-Law: Wayne Adams of Modesto, California Many nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
