Obituary - Mrs. Ole Torgeson Passes Away

Died: - Sunday, July 28, 1912, Mrs. Guri Nilsen Torgerson, wife of Ole Torgerson, aged 39 years, 3 months and 10 days. Mrs. Torgerson was born April 18, 1873, at Bjelandsang, Norway, and as a girl came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nilsen. On December 25, 1896, she was united in marriage to Ole Torgerson, and all her married life has been spent at their fine farm home east of Stephen. Seven children blessed this union, six of whom survive their mother. Mrs. Torgerson has not been well since the birth of her infant daughter Gladys about 8 weeks ago and growing worse was sent to St. Paul for treatment, and although all was done for her that could be, she gradually grew worse and passed quietly away Sunday. Mrs. Torgerson was a woman of fine character, a goodwife and mother, a Christian woman whom all knew her thought a great deal of. The funeral services were held from the Lutheran church in Stephen Wednesday afternoon, Rev. T.A. Mason conducting the service, and interment was made in the Stephen cemetery. Besides her beloved husband, Ole Torgerson, and her children, Mollie, Ida, Inez, Selma, Erling and Gladys, she leaves to mourn her loss, her father, Thomas Nilsen, and her brothers Nels and Thorkild, and sisters Mrs. Christ Walbeck and Mrs. Herman Kathman of Crookston. To the bereaved husband and family the sympathy of the entire community goes out in their hour of sorrow. He careth! Oh! What wondrous rest Does this thought with it bring: Enough to make the desolate Rejoice once more and sing. He careth! And he will not let Us have too much to bear; Nor any burden great or small, But what He too will share.

Obituary - Stephen Messenger (1 Aug 1912)

Noble Life Has Passed to Rest.
Early Sunday morning, July 28th, the spirit of Mrs. Ole Torgerson deserted its earthly home and silently, swiftly winged its way to that eternal home to its maker and giver, God.

The deceased had not been well for two months and was taken to St. Paul by her husband about three weeks ago to the hospital in hopes her health would be regained, but there was no change and Mr. Torgerson thought it best to take her home as long as they could not help her and where every little attention could be given his beloved wife, but the morning of the day they were to leave there she passed away to eternal rest, caused by the bursting of a blood vessel in her head.

The remains were prepared for shipment, reaching here Monday and the funeral was held yesterday afternoon, at two o'clock from the Lutheran church with the Rev. T. A. Mason of Moorhead, officiating.

Let us, if possible gather up the elements of the departed and weave of them a picture for the walls of memory. Mrs. Torgerson's maiden name was Gina Nelson and was the daughter of Mr. Thos. Nelson, she was born at Bjelandsong, Norway, April 3rd, 1873, came to America when 19 years of age and was married to Ole Torgerson, a well known and respected farmer of this vicinity, on December 25, 1896. She leaves besides her husband six children, the youngest but two months old, also her aged father, Thos. Nelson, brothers Torkild and Nils, sisters Mrs. Chris Walbeck of this place and Mrs. Kathman of Crookston.

All the care and love that skilled physicians and anxious neighbors and household could devise and apply for her comfort and assistance were brought into play, but the fate of Him who rules our incomings and outgoings had been issued and despite the prayers and entreaties of all who knew and loved her, and they were legion, their appeals were over-ruled.

The flowers given to show the esteem in which she was held were beautiful, but not more than the face that rested as so peacefully among them. Beautiful in life, in death, but far more beautiful on the glorious resurrection morn. Flowers seem to be the best emblem we have to express our love, for we wreathe them around the cradle, the marriage alter and the tomb. Thus would we leave her, and in memory keep her, as sweetly reposing among the beautiful and fragrant flowers. The Messenger deeply sympathizes with those bereaved hearts who have had their loved one taken.
Not hear, O death, not here,
Is there no other flower for thee to take?
All the world is mine, and for its sake
Oh! come not here."
But alas, "Death loves a shinning mark" - and so it came.
