Helen Louise "Burr" Smith, age 96, of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at River Terrace Health Campus in Madison. She was born October 19, 1925 in Madison, the daughter of Everett and Louise Martha (Helt) Goins.

Mrs. Smith was a 1944 graduate of Madison High School and a 1956 graduate of the Louisville College of Beauty Culture and becoming a licensed hairdresser. She owned and operated Smith's Beauty Shop on Mulberry Street from July 1957 – July 2003 when she retired. She formerly co-owned and operated The Yarn Shop with Anna Laura Peddie for many years, teaching many how to knit.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, its Esther Wiebe/Fern Gronseth Mission Circle and served on many committees and boards of the church. She was also the treasurer of the Madison Baptist Association for many years.

She was an avid Indiana University, University of Tennessee and Madison Cubs fan, having held season tickets to the Cubs basketball games for many years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, watching her nieces and nephews play in sporting events, and going to the Madison Regatta.

Survivors include four sisters: Mary Duncan and her husband, Jim, Margaret Carlow and her husband, Paul, Sherrill Holt and her husband, Jim, and Karen Thomas, all of Madison; three brothers: Richard Goins and his wife, Marianne of St. Marys, Georgia, Charles Goins and John Goins and his wife, Wanda, all of Madison; one sister-in-law, Sue Goins of Madison; eight nieces, thirteen nephews, and several great and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Clifford G. "Bud" Smith in January 1961, and to whom she was married on May 30, 1958; three brothers: William "Pinhead" Goins, Benjamin Goins and his wife, Mary Jo, and Daniel Goins; two sisters: Audrey Andrews and her husband, Whitty, and Mabel Guthrie and her husband, Jean; one brother-in-law, Wayne Thomas; one niece, Sheila VanTassel; and one nephew, Brian Carlow.

The Reverend Randy Crutchfield will conduct the funeral services.
