Burton died Friday (Aug. 13, 1993) at Guadalupe Medical Center. He was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Willard, Okla., and started as a "soda jerk" in Ashland, Kan. He received his pharmacy license for New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas in 1939.

Barton served in the U.S. Navy as Chief Pharmacy Mate from 1941-1945. He spent part of that time in charge of the San Diego Naval Hospital Pharmacy, the largest pharmacy in the world with 50,000 patients.

He married Jean Burton in 1949 in New York City, and the couple moved to Carlsbad in 1953 to open Burton Drug Co., 711 W. Church St. While living in New York City, he was one of the five people selected to reorganize New York City's Civil Defense system in 1951-52.

Burton Drug was moved to the Nortgate Shopping Center in 1962. For many years, Burton was president of the Northgate Shopping Association, president of the Carlsbad Retail Druggists, a member of the National Association of Retail Druggists, a member of the New Mexico Pharmaceutical Association and a former district chairman of that association. Burton Drug closed July 31 due to Burton's illness.

He was a member of Eddy Lodge No 21 AF&AM as a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, Midian Temple, the One Hundred Million Dollar Shrine Club and president of the Carlsbad Humane Society, Inc., and was one of the founders of that society. In 1987, he received the Special Recognition Award from the Carlsbad Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Burton, of Carlsbad; one nephew, Jim Burton of Yukno, Okla., one niece, Juanita Schillin of Bucklin, Kan.; and five great-nephews and nieces.

A.J. Brandon, Dr. M.D. Reynolds, Dr. Ernest Booth, Homer Collier, George Carriker and William L. Miller are scheduled to serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Carlsbad Humane Society or a charity of choice.
