Vera "Vivi" French Bates, died February 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Regional Hospital, Phoenix, AZ. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is handling arrangements. Mrs. Bates was born in Davenport on September 14, 1921, the third of four children of Dorothy Lischer and George Decker French. She graduated from St. Katharine's School and Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa. She earned a masters degree and Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University and an M.D. from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She served an internship and residency at University Hospitals, Iowa City, IA. Vera French married Howard Thomas Bates in 1953. They had three children, twin sons, Christopher McCluer and John Lischer, and a daughter, Alison Katharine. After the deaths of his mother and grandmother, Mrs. Bates' nephew, Michael C. Hoyt, became a part of the immediate family. Dr. French, as she was known professionally, was assistant professor of psychology at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa., from 1944 to 1949 and clinical associate professor at the University of Iowa from 1965 to 1968. She was in private practice of psychiatry in Davenport from 1955 to 1961 when she joined the staff of the Mental Health Center of Scott County. She served as associate director until 1968 when she became director, a position she held until 1980 when she retired. During that period, Center services became increasingly comprehensive and a new facility was built at 1441 W. Central Park Avenue. Upon retirement in 1980, Mrs. Bates continued to serve on state and regional mental health commissions and on the Board of Trustees of Bryn Mawr College. She also was active in a number of community organizations, serving on the boards of St. Luke's Hospital, the Family Practice Residency Program, Hospice Care of Scott County, and the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend. At the time of her death, Mrs. Bates was a Trustee Emeritus of Bryn Mawr College, a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a life member of the Scott County Medical Society. She held honorary degrees from Marycrest and St. Ambrose Colleges. In 1982, the mental health center was renamed the Vera French Community Mental Health Center in her honor.
