Mary Frances (possibly Mary Ann) Strickland Bennett was born April 14, 1833 in Bulloch County, Georgia, the daughter of John Strickland and Nancy "Mercy" Martin Strickland. Her brothers were Confederate veterans James Martin Strickland (Company I, 25th Georgia Infantry) and Henry Strickland (Company G, 7th Georgia Cavalry). She married Confederate soldier James Bennett (Company C, 47th Georgia Infantry) who was killed instantly by cannon ball in battle near Bentonville, North Carolina around March 20, 1865. They had a daughter Janie Eliza Bennett Hendrix. During the war Mary and Janie lived next to Mary's father, John Strickland, in Ware (Pierce) County, Georgia. Throughout her life Mary lived in Bulloch, Bryan, Ware, Pierce, and Tattnall counties. She lived with her daughter Janie and son-in-law Joseph Fountain Hendrix after their marriage. Mary was 77 when she died the day after her birthday on April 15, 1910. Like her husband, Mary is buried in Upper Black Creek Cemetery in Bulloch County, Georgia.

Mary's Native American line goes back to the Coree Indians who lived on the Atlantic coast along the Virginia/North Carolina border. By the late 17th century, the Coree population had declined due to disease and war. During the Tuscarora War, some of the surviving Coree fled south seeking refuge among the Cheraw Indians. Later some surviving Cheraws, remnants of other Indian groups, whites, and African Americans became the basis of the contemporary Lumbee Indians.
