Military figure, philanthropist. During WWII, received Bronze Star and the French Medaille de Reconnaissance; Commanding, rank of Major, 113th Quartermaster Regiment, Battalion Staffs, First Battalion, 38th DIV, Camp Shelby, 1941; in 1959 became top Army Reserve officer in Kentucky; 1961 trained 30,000 soldiers during Berlin Crisis, which earned him the Legion of Merit and a Presidential Citation from John F. Kennedy. Also a strong advocate of desegregation.
