Evansville, IN — LTC Gary E. Chesser (MSC), 70, of San Antonio, TX, passed away Monday, April 25, 2011, following a long illness. He was born March 9, 1941, in Winslow, IN.
He spent most of his youth in Evansville, graduating from Central High School in 1959. He served in the US Air Force from 1960-1967 and was a Vietnam Veteran. He received his BA Degree from the University of Evansville in 1969 and worked as a counselor with the Southwest Mental Health Center and as a Probation Officer with Superior Court in Evansville.
In 1973 he returned to active duty with the US Army and retired in 1992, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with an outstanding performance record. He was Commander of the 583rd Medical Company and 31st Ambulance Train in Landstuhl, Germany; the Medical Company at Redstone Arsenal, AL; Headquarters & Alpha Company of the 47th Medical Battalion in Nuernberg, Germany; and the 2nd Medical Detachment in Heidelberg, Germany. He also served as Executive Officer/Troop Commander at the 769th Medical Detachment (DS) in Augsburg, Germany and the DENTAC at Fort Knox, KY; Instructor at the Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam Houston, TX; and the Dental Readiness Staff Officer in the Army Surgeon General's Office in Washington, DC.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (two medals), Vietnam Service Medal (three bronze stars), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry (with Palm), Expert Field Medical Badge, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal (two medals), and the American Spirit Honor Medal.
After retirement from his military career, Gary pursued his passion for golf and was an honor graduate of the San Diego Golf Academy in 1993, remaining there for a year as an instructor. He was golf coach for Webster County High School from 1995-1998 and also on the staff of Taylor Made Golf Company, giving clinics and demonstrating golf equipment.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Mildred Chesser of Evansville; and sister, Hiwana Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gwenda (VanMeter) Chesser of San Antonio, TX; brother, Kerry Chesser and wife, Nina, of Newburgh; and brother-in-law, Tom Raleigh of Sebree, KY.
Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Alexander East Chapel, with a graveside service to follow in Spurgeon Cemetery in Spurgeon, IN. Friends may visit Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
