Born in Boston, Lanny founded Reason Magazine in 1968 as a student at Boston University. He ran the magazine for a short time then dropped out of sight for 40 years. In the early 70s Mr. Friedlander was unable to continue running the company and sold it to a consortium of its writers. He was retained as an editor for a period of time. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was stationed aboard the USS Forrestal. Even though he was opposed to the draft he enlisted in the Navy. His career in the military was also short lived when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia before he was shipped overseas and was discharged. Reason Magazine opened an office in Washington DC in 2007 and searched for a picture of Mr. Friedlander to hang on the wall. No picture of him could be found. In the first issue published, May, 1968, He wrote, "When REASON speaks of poverty, racism, the draft, the war, student power, politics, and other vital issues, it shall be reasons, not slogans, it gives for conclusions, Proof, not belligerent assertion. Logic, not legends. Coherence, not contradictions. This is our promise: this is the reason for REASON."
