John Bernard (AKA Bernard)Brass arrived in New Orleans with his family December 2nd,1851 from Bremerhaven, Germany aboard the ship Milan. After wintering there the family traveled up the Mississippi River Wabasha, MN where his father farmed.

He married Anna Lager in 1868 and moved to Reads Landing and then to Wilson, Wi where he was a store clerk. In 1880 he moved to Glencoe where in 1884 he married Helena Heimann and managed a large grain elevator for A.H. Reed. (Capt. Reed as he was know was a distinguished soldier, businessman and politician who was awarded the Metal of Honor). Later John managed a grain elevator in Green Isle, MN before buying a 160 a. farm SW of Glencoe in 1888 where he farmed until he retired to Glencoe in 1915.
