The funeral of William Pine was held from his late home in the Little Cove, Tuesday December 23. The sermon was preached in the Union church. Mr. Pine was one of the oldest residents of this region, being aged 82 years, 8 months and 26 days. He lived in the Little Cove for than 50 years, having served in the Union Army and at one time was incarcerated in Libby prison. He leaves to mourn their loss a large family, five boys and three girls. (From the Mercersburg Journal, Friday January 2, 1914 Issue)

In 1860, he was a laborer living in Franklin County, and stood 6' 0" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg February 20, 1864, and mustered into federal service there February 25 as a private with Co. L, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). On October 27, 1864, he was captured at
Boydton Plank Road near Petersburg, Virginia, and sent to Richmond where he was incarcerated on Belle Isle in the James River. (Contrary to what the obituary claims, enlisted men were processed through Libby Prison but incarcerated on Belle Isle.) Paroled February 17, 1865, at Aiken's Landing, he arrived at Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, and granted a thirty-day furlough starting March 3, 1865. He returned to duty April 4, and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.
