George "W." Russell, 77, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, Retired, of Vernon, husband of Nancy (Mallinson) Russell, died on Thursday, (December 27, 2001) at home. Born in Waterbury, he was the son of the late Dr. George W. and Eileen (O'Meara) Russell. George attended the Waterbury schools and was graduated from the College of The Holy Cross, Worcester, MA.

After completing a tour of duty in the Navy, he entered Connecticut Light and Power in Waterbury where he worked until recalled for duty for the Korean Conflict. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he returned to CL&P in New Britain, followed by positions in Niantic, Danielson and Enfield, where he retired as the Northern Division manager.

Mr. Russell had been active in both religious and political activities in Vernon where he has resided for the past 33 years. He was past president and director of the Rockville Chamber of Commerce, a Vernon Town Council member for three terms, a member of "Support our Troops Committee", the Conn. Senior Internship Program in Washington, D.C., 1990, past chairman, Economic Development Commission, the Rockville Elks, American Legion Post #14, the Retired Officers Association of Hartford, the Vernon Housing Authority Board of Directors, and a communicant of St. Bernard Church.

Besides his wife, Nancy, he leaves his children, George W., III and his wife Mary Pat Champeau of Ellsworth, ME, Mark L. and his wife Donna Antonelli of Vernon; a daughter, Susan and her husband B. Lance Graves of Omaha, NB; a daughter, Ellen-Anne Russell and her husband David Santos of Charlotte, VT; his sisters, Christine Canfield of Litchfield, Mary Jane Denard of North Stonington, and Josephine Reynold of Branford; ten grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth Depot, Jane Gilmore, Col. Georgeann Russell and Gloria Carlson.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 9:15 a.m., at the Ladd-Turkington Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd., Rt. 83, Vernon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernard Church, Rockville, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery, Vernon, with full Military Honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Dec. 30, 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to North Central Hospice, Visiting Nurse and Community Care, 8 Keynote Dr., Vernon, CT 06066 or to Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut, 70 Cannon Rd., East Hartford, 06108.
