Warrant Officer 1 Gibbons first joined the United States Navy in June of 1916. In September of 1918, he was appointed as a Warrant Officer (Acting Pay Clerk). He evenutually retired from the Navy in May of 1945. He was both a World War I and a World War II veteran. He saw sea duty on the USS Gilliam (APA-57), USS Oregon, USS Mercy, USS Bushnell and the USS Neville. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, World War I Victory medal, American Defense Service medal, American Theater Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one bronze service star, World War II Victory medal, Naval Reserve medal and the Philippine Liberation ribbon.
