US Congressman, Jurist. Born in New York City into an impoverished family, he was raised in Toledo, Ohio. At age 10, he was forced to leave school and learn his father's trade as a shoemaker. After the death of his parents, he moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1842, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1847. In 1863, Governor Horatio Seymour appointed Daniels an Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James J. Hoyt; he was subsequently elected to three terms and remained on the bench until his compulsory retirement in 1891. Venturing into politics at age 67, Daniels won election as a Republican to the Fifty-Third and Fifty-Fourth US Congresses, serving from 1893 to 1897. During his second term, he was Chairman of the Committee on Elections No. 1. He refused to seek a third term and retired to Buffalo, where he died several months later.
