U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union College, in 1856, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced to practice law in Buffalo, New York. He was District Attorney for Erie County, (1865-72). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. Due to ill health he declined to be a candidate for re-nomination, moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and continued the practice of law. There he also served as general counsel for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company, (1878-84). He died of consumption at age 52 while on a visit to New York City.
