U.S. Congressman. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army at the age if fifteen and served as a Private in the 128th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he graduated from Bowdoin College Maine, in 1870, moved to Indiana, was one of the editors for the Daily Gazette, (1871-74), was secretary of the Indiana Republican State Committee in 1874, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1877 and practiced law in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was Fifth Auditor of the Treasury Department, (1881-85), commander of the Department of the Potomac, Grand Army of the Republic, in New York, in 1885 and was appointed United States Attorney for the northern district of New York, serving (1889-93). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1911. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 78.
