Henry Fitzbutler

Civil Rights activist, physician and publisher. Born of fugitive slave parents who had escaped to Canada, Fitzbutler became the first black graduate of the University of Michigan medical school. First black to run for elective office in Louisville, campaigning unsuccessfully several times for school board. Taught at state-chartered Louisville National Medical College, a fully integrated institution and one of only five medical schools in the nation to offer a degree program to black citizens.
