US Congressman. He was born in Millbrook, New York, and received local limited schooling, before engaging in mercantile retail business pursuits as an adult from 1806 to 1815. He also engaged in wholesale mercantile business pursuits as a partner with Gardner and Vail where they sold groceries, dry goods, and hardware, from 1815 to 1832. A successful entrepreneur, he also ran the Mount Ida Farm where he grew pears, apples, peaches, goosebumps, currants, grapes, and plums, was involved in several horticultural and agricultural societies and was on the board of directors of the Troy City Bank in Troy, New York. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and won. A Democrat, he then served New York's 9th District (Twenty-Fifth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1837 to 1839. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to serve the Twenty-Sixth Congress in 1838. After his time in public service ended, he resumed his business pursuits until his death. He passed away in Troy, New York, at the age of 70, and was buried there in the Oakwood Cemetery.
