James is the son of Robert Gilmore and Frances 'Frankey' (Ford) Gilmore - he was the younger of their two sons

James married Sarah Jane McQueary on 17 Mar 1846 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. They were the parents of seven children, four who died in infancy or childhood: William Z, an unnamed son, Robert G and Merranda J., Milton Green who was living in Pulaski County a "single man" in 1887 but was gone from the county by 1900, and two daughters Elizabeth Francis and Martha Ellen who married and had children.

5 April 1847 James Gilmore and wife Sarah J. Gilmore sell to Richard Blacklidge, all of Pulaski Co., KY for $216 on the waters of Fishing Creek and Cumberland River containing 118 2/3 acres being part and parcel of tract conveyed by Zachariah Ford and his wife Kezziah Ford unto Robert Gilmore, dec'd. It is also known as a part of the Dick V. Lewis claim held by the said Zachariah Ford, dec'd. It is also known as part of the estate of Robert Gilmore that was alloted to the said James Gilmore as one of the heirs.

By 1852 the family had moved to Iowa...
In 1852, James bought 40 acres of Government land in Lucas Co., Iowa and in 1856 he patented an additional 80 acres in Wayne Co., Iowa.

After his wife Sarah's death, James took his three young children (Robert, Milton and Martha) back to Kentucky and lived with his mother-in-law, Miranda McQuary, leaving only his daughter, Elizabeth, in Iowa.

James never remarried to my knowledge and died in 1899.
