Travis Milton Stokes, 78, of Hickory, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2010, at his residence. Born Jan. 11, 1932, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Daisy Owen and Noah Franklin Stokes. Mr. Stokes was a member of First Baptist Church in Hickory and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He graduated from Catawba College with a degree in accounting and worked for the IRS for eight years. He started his CPA business in 1966 with just a few clients, and built it into a pillar of the Hickory community that is still going over 50 years later. So many of his clients have been coming back for over 30 years because he always took so much pride in taking care of every one of them. He spent countless hours doing everything he could to help his clients, and he truly cared about every tax return as much as he did his own. His children are so proud to keep his legacy going strong, continuing his business that not only provided everything for his own family, but for his children's families as well. He also coached Little League baseball and football. He was a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed tennis and golf. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Stokes. He is survived by his wife, Betty Sellers Stokes of the home; daughter, Sandra Stokes Starnes and husband, Eric, of Taylorsville; son, Michael Dean Stokes and wife, Lois, of Lewisville; six grandchildren, Christopher Starnes, David Starnes, Melissa Starnes, Emily Stokes, Katie Stokes and Michael Stokes; and a number of nieces and nephews.
