U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1778 and commenced to practice law in Poughkeepsie, New York. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the New York State Militia and attained the rank of Brigadier General. In 1793, he was elected to the Third and Fourth Congresses, serving until 1797. He was reelected to the Third and Fourth Congresses, in 1799 and elected to the Seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Thomas Tillotson, serving until 1803. In 1803, he was elected to the United States Senate, serving until 1804. After his term, he was postmaster for the City of New York, until his death at age 69.
