Jane Alsever Bailey, 100, of Annapolis, MD died of natural causes November 21. Mrs. Bailey was born in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of the late Dr. William Dewey and Clara Bellows Alsever. She spent her early years in Syracuse and graduated from Syracuse University in 1932 where she was vice-president of the Women's Athletic Association and later simultaneously president of her Alpha Phi Sorority, Eta Pi Upsilon (the senior women's honorary similar to Mortar Board), and the English Club. A college highlight was introducing the poet Robert Frost to the student body. She spent summers at the Tully Lake family cottage and as a camp swimming instructor and waterfront director.

She was the wife of Capt. George Winston Bailey (USN Ret.), a 1932 U.S. Naval Academy graduate. They had celebrated 68 years of marriage at the time of his death in 2002. His assignments took them to various states including California, Massachusetts, Texas, Rhode Island, Washington and Washington D. C. . She held various offices in Navy Wives Clubs, Brownie and Girl Scout troops and the Junior Army Navy Guild Organization (JANGO) and other clubs during her husband's Naval career.

After they retired to California in 1962, her activities included being a founding member of the Alpha Phi Sorority chapter at Long Beach State College, the membership chairman of her local Republican Club, a precinct chairman, and a volunteer for the Lakewood Benefit League. She and her husband moved to Annapolis in 1995 to be near their family. Her Ginger Cove friends will especially recall her friendship, winning personality and love of music.

Mrs. Bailey also will be remembered as a loving wife and mother. Always a lady, she had a delightful sense of humor, a compassionate heart and, like her late husband, was a person of integrity. Survivors include three daughters, Janet Schoening, Susan Miller of Annapolis and Nancy Austin of Bluffton, South Carolina; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
