US Congressman, Professional Baseball Player. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, he was a catcher and made his debut with the New York Yankees on August 20, 1914. In two seasons with the Yankees (1914-15), he had 68 hits, 81 runs scored, 81 runs batted in, a .208 batting average and a .966 fielding percentage. During World War I, he served in the US Navy as an Ensign. After the war, he was president of the Bank of Angola, New York, (1921-31) and was county clerk for Erie County New York, (1933-38). In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth and Seventy-seventh Congresses and served until his death at age 48.
