JONESBORO — Elmer H. Holmes, 91, of Jonesboro died Wednesday at St. Bernards Medical Center.

He had lived in Northeast Arkansas his entire life. He was a hard worker and was a farmer in his early life. He loved to play cards and dominoes with his friends at the nursing home, and he usually won. He had competed in the Senior Olympics and had many ribbons and medals to show for it.

He is survived by his children, William Holmes and Jerry Holmes, both of Michigan, Louise Baty of Jonesboro, Jeanette Goff and Shirley Holmes, both of Michigan, and Linda Burnett of Indiana; brothers, Milburn Holmes of Illinois and Chester Holmes; sister, Phyllis Gandy of Trumann; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Birdie Jeanette Holmes; son, Billy Paul Holmes; daughters, Betty Faye Holmes and Jessie Marie Bullock; brother, Kenneth Holmes; and parents, William Hardy and Lidia Rhodes Holmes.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Perry Tidwell officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Log Cemetery. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be Tony Smith, John Yarbro, Chris Fears, Nick Barnett, Shawn Green and Jeff Huffman. Honorary pallbearer will be Taylor Huffman.

Visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
