US Congressman. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he attended the US Military Academy West Point, (1826-28), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced to practice in Newark, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly, (1837-38) and a alderman of Newark, (1837-40). In 1853, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress and reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. After leaving the Congress, he moved to New York City, where he died at age 56. His son Alexander C.M. Pennington Jr. was a Union Brigadier General in the Civil War.
